Eldonna edwards books5/24/2023 ![]() ![]() My goal in writing THIS I KNOW was to take a God-fearing preacher and thrust him into a situation where he’s forced to reexamine everything he understands, or thinks he understands. But that’s pretty much where real life and story part ways. Carter, my mother lost a full-term baby that she deeply grieved. Grace has four sisters I had five sisters and a baby brother. Like Grace, I was a child of the sixties, albeit a half-step behind my young protagonist. They live in the fictional lakeside town of Cherry Hill, MI. ![]() That said, there are definite parallels between my family and the Carters. Conversely, although they suffered through my rebellious teen years, I never for a moment in my life felt unloved by my parents. Grace’s daddy is dogmatic, proud and devoted to his family and flock, but he can’t see past his rigid beliefs to recognize how blessed he is by a daughter he fears and condemns. Carter, my father was as kind and generous a man as you could meet-not the type of person who would make for a dynamic character in a novel. Yes, I enjoyed a fertile upbringing from which to harvest colorful characters and a rich setting, but no, this is not a story about me or about my family. ![]() Occasionally someone will ask if THIS I KNOW is autobiographical. In my author bio I describe how I teethed on the back of Southern Baptist pews in rural Midwest towns where my father preached. My mom would have three more babies before completing the Edwards family. ![]() That’s me in my oldest sister Sharon’s lap. ![]()

How did I keep track of all these as a 10-year-old? I had skimmed over the introduction which explains why these sky pirates exist (I was too distracted by the drawings) so now I had no idea why one ship was fighting another and why there were goblin slaves onboard. ![]() There are so many characters with obscure names to remember: Quint, Wind Jackal, Ice Fox, Linius Pallitax, Ramrock, Queep, in the opening pages alone. Picking up the first book, the 439-page Curse of the Gloamglozer, the drawings were just as vivid as I remembered, beginning with the Hieronymus Bosch-levels of detail in the levitating city of Sanctaphrax. Surely a children’s book now would be too easy and too boring? After university courses stacked with postmodernism, postcolonialism, structuralism and all the other “isms”, I had been sucked into the allure of the weighty, “difficult” tome books you read not just for pleasure but to say that you’ve read. ![]() The intervening decades have seen me keep up my love of TV – namely in my role at the Guardian – but also move forward in my taste for books, which became an equally enduring passion. Going back to the books for the first time in almost 20 years, I was sceptical. ![]() I Pick You by Jettie Woodruff5/24/2023 ![]() ![]() Explore the world and discover new monuments. Wells is remembered today primarily as one of the godfathers of science fiction. So, the much better question to ask-for the sake of analysis-is whether a more proper title for the novel might not be “The Invisible Men” with a plural? But is he really the invisible man? Again, the answer is obvious: yes. Griffin, the mad scientist whose half-genius at unlocking the secrets to invisibility but not the secrets to the way back, is clearly an invisible man. Wells’ novel? The most obvious-and correct-answer would be, of course, Griffin. ![]() We are thankful for their contributions and encourage you to make your own. This sequence was not known in its original manuscript order until a 1953 article by Fredson Bowers. Even in Whitman's intimate writing style, these poems, read in their original sequence, seem unusually personal and candid in their disclosure of love and disappointment, and this manuscript has become central to arguments about Whitman's homoeroticism or homosexuality. These poems seem to recount the story of a relationship between the speaker of the poems and a male lover. ![]() These poems were all incorporated in Whitman's 1860 edition of Leaves of Grass, but out of their original sequence. ![]() ![]() The first evidence of the poems that were to become the "Calamus" cluster is an unpublished manuscript sequence of twelve poems entitled "Live Oak With Moss," written in or before spring 1859. ![]() ![]() ![]() Originally from Zimbabwe, Africa, her home port is now Wanaque, New Jersey, and she has flown across the world in her travels.
